The aim of the research is to analyze the social, economic risks associated with the features of functioning of single-parent families for demographic sustainability, well-being, demographic and national security of Russia. The objectives of the study are: conceptual analysis of incomplete families in terms of the content of the concepts of “demographic stability”, “demographic well-being”, “demographic security”; systematization and typology of the characteristics of incomplete families based on the works of modern Russian and foreign authors on the transformation of parental and family practices. The novelty of the work is the consideration of the problems of single-parent families in the paradigm of demographic well-being and security. The materials are official demographic statistics, the results of sociological research conducted in 2022 by the Institute for Demographic Research of the Federal Center of Theoretical and Applied Sociology of the Russian Academy of Sciences as part of the national monitoring “Demographic wellbeing of Russian regions”, publications by Russian and foreign authors analyzing different aspects of the functioning of single-parent families. The article uses general scientific analytical methods, methods of statistical and demographic analysis, content analysis of documents, and qualitative methods of sociological research. The paper shows the need to develop methodological tools and to include indicators related to quantitative and qualitative parameters of single-parent families in the demographic well-being index. Future research directions may include comparative analysis and ranking of Russia’s constituent entities in terms of risks associated with the growing share of single-parent families, current living standards and social and economic problems they face for demographic and national security. The analysis of family and demographic transformations in a group of ethno-national republics, taking into account their spatial and geographical location and with special attention to border territories, seems to be a promising research direction
