Abstract

The purpose of the study is to identify the needs of a modern family, describe and characterize the institutional resources of a modern family based on secondary data from a sociological survey of families in the Volgograd region. The methodological basis of the research was made up of Russian and foreign works that consider the family as a social institution within the framework of two paradigms: the modernization paradigm, represented by the theory of demographic transition, and the crisis paradigm, represented by the theory of the institutional crisis of the family. It has been revealed that there are not enough studies evaluating the institutional resources of Russian families. The empirical basis of the study was a secondary analysis of the survey data conducted in 2022 in the Volgograd region, n = 826, the sample is quota based on the territory of residence and socio-demographic characteristics of the population of the Volgograd region. The results of the study showed that the main institutional resource for supporting families is material (financial) support. Maternal (family) capital is the main economic means of stimulating fertility, but its effect does not have a decisive impact on the final birth rate. It has been revealed that the reasons why women in the Volgograd region would decide to have another child are related not only to maternity capital, but also to the availability of high-quality medical care and preschool educational institutions. Insufficient awareness of the range of social services provided has been revealed, as well as difficulties in connection with the bureaucratization of the process of receiving services, which requires a review of the policy of informing families in the region and adjusting the regulations for the provision of social services. Research prospects. Generalized data on the needs and institutional resources of families in the Volgograd region can be used to adjust the methods of working with families.
