The author set the following objectives: to determine the key areas of economic development of GBAO, to identify the advantages and disadvantages, and to reveal the dynamics of their development. The study is based on the content analysis of open sources of information: scientific articles, analytical reports and annual reports of the Republic of Tajikistan and international organizations. Situated directly between China and the Western world, GBAO was an important trading center on the Silk Road, which gave it an economically strategic position. This article analyzes the economic development of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region. The economy of this region is characterized by a high level of poverty, limited economic opportunities. The main aspect that gives a serious impetus to the economic and social development of the region is the development of the mining industry and agriculture. Despite the enormous wealth of natural resources, it remains the least developed region of the country. Due to the geographical features of GBAO, the local population focuses on the development of small and medium businesses. The small and medium business sector provides employment for many in the region, creating a significant share of the gross regional product. The author pays special attention to the investment strategy of GBAO and the structure of investments that affect economic growth. Taking into account the analysis and based on the information obtained, the author determined that in the conditions of GBAO, where the economy depends entirely on agriculture and mining, it is necessary to finance these areas, in particular in the field of improving infrastructure and technology. Projects do not have to be large in size, but they must be sustainable over time and meet local needs. This requires deep engagement from investors, who need to increasingly engage with the region through visits and identifying key local partners and programs. A trend towards increased investment in agriculture and industry was identified.
