Abstract

This article attempts to identify the causes of the value conflict in the perception of residents of the Rostov region of a number of unfriendly states and assess its possible consequences. The main purpose of the study is to analyze the opinions of Taganrog residents about a number of countries they dislike, while choosing them as attractive for a potential visit, if possible, which is the basis for a conflict of values. The study is based on the empirical data of a pilot sociological study conducted by the staff of the SRB – FRSC RAS in 2023. A questionnaire was chosen as the main research method, and a survey was conducted among residents of the city of Taganrog. The reasons for the emergence of a value conflict in the perception of a number of unfriendly countries – the United States, Great Britain, France, and Germany - are revealed. It is established that due to the influence of a number of external factors, Taganrog residents are characterized by a conflict of cognition of values, that is, a situation in which the realization of secondary post-materialistic values (social, cultural, spiritual, recreational) is impossible without achieving primary materialistic values (security, economic well-being). The possible consequences of the value conflict are outlined: deterioration of the psychological and social well-being of the individual, the formation of stereotypes, deterioration of interpersonal and interethnic relations. The results described in this article can be useful for further study of the sociology of international relations, as well as used for planning activities aimed at combating the formation of stable negative stereotypes among residents of Taganrog about residents of unfriendly states and contributing to the further development of bilateral interethnic cooperation.
