Abstract

The collapse of the USSR and the subsequent reforms turned the former superpower into a country without sovereignty and without national interests. Post-Soviet Russia was considered by othercountries as a commodity appendage of the Western economies. Therefore, a natural reaction of the new Russian government to these processes was the attempt to reintegrate the former Soviet countries and to initiate Russia’s participation in several international integration projects. The goal of this policy was to develop the economy and to return to the country the status of the superpower.Methods.Analysis of scientific publications on the topic, analysis of official sources, speeches of political leaders, expert opinions, sociocultural analysis, statistical data and sociological analysis.Results. The general conclusion of the performed analysis is that there is a need to overcome the inconsistency in Russia’s relationships with its closest neighbors and to develop Russia’s strategic policy,which would be based on clearly defined national interests. These issues have been already quite actively discussed by public and recently in the scientific literature.Conclusion. Considering the real attitude of the Russians to the occurred changes and in response to the rigid sanctions of the Western countries, Russia should use the 'window of opportunities” to reach an effective and socially responsible development. In this regard, the paper considers the experience of China with its unique, concise and very clear principles used in sphere of international relations and the highly effective non-western model of the economic development. Both Chinese economic model and as its foreign policy provide China with the worldwide accepted leading status.
