Abstract

The article examines the historical roots and economic factors of temporary internal labor migration of the population in Russia. A review of research on otkhodnichestvo in historical retrospect is presented. The article analyzes the process of renewal of this form of combining labor and capital in the modern history of Russia, in the conditions of functioning of market relations in general and the labor market in particular. The main attention is paid to the results of a sociological survey of households in certain regions of Russia that have otkhodniki in their composition, while the emphasis is on the socio-economic and demographic consequences of otkhodnichestvo for families of temporary labor migrants. In addition to the obvious positive economic effect of improving the financial situation of households, the authors assess most of the social consequences of otkhodnichestvo as negative, associated with the regular prolonged absence of one of the family members. The authors point to the need to create new jobs in the regions and streamline internal labor migration.
