The purpose of the study was to identify the emigration motives of the population, to search for the causes of migration loss. The information base for the study was the data of regional and municipal statistics of Rosstat, as well as the results of sociological surveys of the population conducted in the regions of Western Siberia. To study the demographic development of the regions of Western Siberia, the methods of cartographic, statistical, comparative analysis were used, survey methods, statistical, graphic methods were used in social research. As a result of the study, the features of the demographic development of Western Siberia at the regional and municipal levels are determined. New centers of migration growth outside the agglomerations in the regions of Western Siberia have been identified. The main determinants of emigration of the population from the West Siberian regions have been found, among which low incomes of the population and outstripping price growth are of primary importance. The paradox of the regional economy has been discovered, in which the level of development of the main resource enterprises has little effect on the growth of the welfare of the population. The peculiarities of diversification of single-industry cities of Kuzbass are revealed, new topical directions of diversification are proposed, taking into account the accumulated experience and opinions of residents of Kuzbass. Economic measures aimed at changing negative demographic processes are proposed. The results of the work can be used by public authorities to develop economic measures aimed at reducing the outflow of population and turning demographic trends in a positive direction. Prospective studies can be aimed at investigating the reasons for the migration attractiveness of individual municipalities, as well as further research of demographic processes and their formative economic causes.
