Abstract

The article deals with preparation and conduct of the All-Union population census of 1939 on the territory of the Volga-Vyatka region. The author defines the tasks of the census and analyzes each of its stages: preparatory, main and conclusive. Unique features of the preparation of the census in the Volga-Vyatka region are singled out, and its conduct is analyzed. It is concluded that there were certain difficulties during the preparation and conduct of the census: language, personnel, and those associated with the peculiarities of the settlement. The level of organization and conduct of the census, the presence of published and unpublished information about the population of the Volga-Vyatka region in the prewar years are indicated.
