Abstract

The paper examines the demographic situation in 18 urbanagglomerations, defined by the Strategy for the Spatial Development of the RussianFederation for the period up to 2025 as promising major centers of economic growthof the Russian Federation. The indicators of natural and migratory growth for2012–2020 are calculated. The role of the components of demographic dynamicsin the changes in the population was determined. It shows the importance ofinternational, inter-regional and intra-regional migration flows in the forming ofmigration increase (decrease). It is noted that in the conditions of the dominance ofMoscow and St. Petersburg agglomerations, the largest second-level agglomerationsare a “weak link” in the hierarchy of centers of settlement and economic activity.
