Comparison of the content of the scientific works of ancient Greek philosophers with specific historical conditions shows the importance of demography and demographic policy for the state structure of ancient Greek city-polises. The first part the article the authors defines the object of study of ancient demography - the population, consisting of citizens of city-states, and also describes its social and gender and age structure. The article notes the importance of accounting for the population. The second part the article the authors formulates the demographic concepts of the ancient Greek philosophers and their implementation within the framework of the demographic policy of the ancient Greek city-states. The instrument for conducting demographic policy and their use are analyzed in detail. A comparison is made of the features of the implementation of demographic concepts in the conditions of Athens and Lacedaemon (Sparta). It is concluded that in Ancient Greece demography already developed and existed as an independent science.
