Abstract

The article is devoted to identifying and analyzing the formats and results of constructing the image of a migrant in modern Russian media discourse, in accordance with which it is shown that the media image of a migrant is constructed by formulating medical frames, slogans, memes, ethnically negative value judgments, value attitudes, media descriptions of events and situations that use xenophobic language. The construction of a negative media image of a migrant is expressed in the following discourse strategies, such as categorization, typification, personalization, dehumanization, stigmatization, discrimination and criminalization, which are reflected in mass public opinion polls that demonstrate a negative and even hostile attitude towards «others» and «foreigners» and results in an increase in the level of xenophobia and migrant phobia, which can be catalysts for interethnic conflicts.
