The scientific problem consists in knowing about the decline in fertility rates, on the one hand, the intensification of fatherhood, on the other, and the lack of knowledge of factors related to the reproductive intentions and behavior of men. The databases of the «Selective observation of the reproductive plans of the population» (RPN-2022) of the Federal State Statistics Service and «The Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Survey – Higher School of Economics» (RLMS-HSE2004, 2013 and 2022) were used. The reproductive intentions of men are analyzed depending on the level of education, the frequency of attendance at religious services, the assessment of the standard of living of the household, the prospects for improving this level in the next three years and housing conditions. The attitudes of men to childlessness are considered, depending on the level of education and age and the level of childlessness of men in the age group of 50–60 years. A comparative analysis of the life goals of men planning and not planning to have children was carried out. Data on the dynamics of the average number of children and marital status among men with different levels of education are presented. It is shown that in comparison with fathers aged 50–60, more childless men dissatisfied with life, had serious nervous disorders, depression and fewer of them assess their health as good. At the same time, there are no differences in indicators of smoking and alcohol consumption. The results of foreign studies on the influence of fatherhood on the well-being of men are also analyzed.
