Abstract

Analysis of statistical data shows that the demographic situation in Russia remains unfavorable. Some regions have introduced lump-sum payments at the birth of the first child by women up to and including the age of 24 in order to prevent population decline and support fertility at earlier ages. Lowering the age of first births may have a favorable effect on the total fertility rate. The authors suggest developing strategies to support the institution of student families to overcome the risks of student marriage and fertility. The student family is a model of earlier marriage and, in some cases, earlier fertility compared to the average indicators in modern Russian society. The aim of the study is to describe the marital, reproductive and self-preservation strategies of members of student families. The findings in this paper are based on the results of in-depth interviews conducted as part of a nationwide survey (n=80). The authors conclude that in order to develop the institution of student family it is necessary not only to develop mechanisms to provide the basic needs of student families, but also to inform society about successful practices of its functioning. The study of marital, reproductive and self-preservation behavior of student family members shows that young people mainly reproduce goal-oriented and value-oriented strategies of behavior and are focused on self-sufficiency. Students are poorly informed about support programmes for young families. Parents of young student families form young people's attitudes towards delayed parenthood, transmit negative attitudes towards old age and increased life expectancy. This has a negative impact on young people's self-preservation behaviour strategies. Educational organizations are institutions that can support student families; become a channel for raising awareness among young people about young family assistance programmes, health preservation.
