Abstract

The purpose of the article is to show that when undergoing transformations that arose as a result of risks caused by various kinds of crises, representatives of the middle class from large cities sometimes choose the strategy of environmental downshifting, while organizing spaces in villages to attract environmental volunteers. The empirical basis of the study consists of 4 case studies of environmental downshifters. The article discusses the reasons for downshifting and environmental downshifting, as one of the types of downshifting; the values of environmental downshifters are analyzed; their subjective assessment of the downshifting process was investigated. The article uses qualitative research methods, such as: secondary data analysis, biographical method, participant observation, semi-structured interview, case study. The article used the approaches of E. Zaltsman in defining downshifting, materials on the topic of self-organization of volunteers by I.V. Mersiyanova, definition of adaptation by P.M. Kozyreva, definitions of active and passive adaptants to environmental risks by A.V. Mozgovaya.
