Abstract

The chapter presents an analysis of two areas of political conflict research: the equilibrium paradigm, which stands behind the names of E. Durkheim, M. Weber, T. Parsons, D. Dewey. These authors considered political conflict as an element of system failure, as a secondary source of politics subordinated to the basic values accepted in society; and the conflict paradigm (A. Tocqueville, K. Marx, G. Simmel, L. Kozer, R. Dahrendorff, K. Boulding, etc.), who considered conflict as the leading source of politics underlying its existence and change. Under the sign of these two approaches, the theory of political conflict has been developing and is largely proceeding. If the center of the first mentioned direction is the politicization of the conflict through its collective manifestation by groups and groups themselves, then the second direction focuses on the "privatization" of the conflict in an individual biography and often leads to a normative preference for social stability and the preservation of the system. The developments of the Russian school of analysis of political conflict are considered in detail.
