Using the methods of quantitative sociological research, the author investigates the functions of historical memory, which is a basic intergenerational value of society, as a mechanism for forming the collective identity of modern Russian society. The scientific novelty of the work is due to the author’s innovative attention to the role of historical memory as a basic value of Russian society in the current conditions of foreign policy isolation, when the national past influences the choice of the vector of social development, is perceived as a resource that allows society to “learn lessons” from the past and build the future on the basis of national values. The main result of the study is the observation that the actual value sovereignty of Russian society on the basis of historical memory contributes to the search for the optimal format of intercultural interaction in a multicultural society. On the basis of the conducted research activities, the author concludes that in modern Russian society historical memory acts as a basic national value, moral reference point, plays a key role in the formation of national identity, acquiring special importance today in dramatic conditions for society and the country.
