Abstract

The author explores the role of collective memory in shaping citizens' perceptions of national history, which becomes the basis for their awareness of the "arrow of time" of the country's history. The chapter explores how the mass perception of key historical events affects public values, forming relevant strategies for the development of society. The author emphasizes that the lessons of history are not only conceptualized, but also reinterpreted by society under the influence of current circumstances, creating the prerequisites for public opinion to form emotionally colored conclusions about the historical path of the country. An example is the change in perception of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, which, in the context of modern foreign policy challenges, has become a cornerstone for strengthening national consolidation. Rethinking historical priorities, moving away from the post-perestroika vector of global integration towards the ideas of historical sovereignty, testifies to the desire of Russians to focus on national values and development goals, which confirms the existence of a basis for a common understanding of key events in Russian history. The chapter draws a conclusion about the relationship between historical events, current challenges and changes in mass consciousness, emphasizing the importance of history lessons as an organizing element for national identity.
