The relevance of the study is due to both the growing importance of innovation in the life of modern society, as well as deepening the differentiation of areas in terms of socio-economic development. Particular attention is paid to the territorial concentration of the innovation process, the specifics of participation of areas with different levels of socio-economic development, the interaction of external and internal factors in the process of creation and dissemination of innovations. The main models of the territorial innovation process are considered. Theoretical and methodological basis of the study is a set of positions which reflect the multi-factor, multi-level and dynamic disbalance nature of the innovation process. It is concluded about the growing innovative inequality of the territories.
