As part of it, one of the objectives was to study social adaptation of internally displaced persons and perception of the refugees in the territory of Russia (“us” or “strangers”). To reach this objective, the article authors in detail has interviewed 24 experts – refugees, employees of the Federal Migration Service, social workers, employees of administrations, organizations engaged in assistance to refugees, individuals who adopted refugees, churchmen and parishioners of the Orthodox Church. Official statistics was engaged, and the relevant documents were analyzed. The article answers the question on how did the local population regarded refugees from the south-east of Ukraine as a result of their mass arrival to Russia (as “us” or “strangers”); in detail describes ways of social adaptation and the difficulties refugees faced; highlights entities of assistance in the process of social adaptation and the conditions for its effective implementation; determines perception of the refugees themselves in the territory of the Russian Federation as “us” or “strangers”.
