Engineering dynasty as a resource for social mobility

Abstract

Thesis is devoted to the topic of the status of the engineering profession and the factor of dynasties in it. The study was a part of a project to study the engineering dynasties in Russia. Professional group is analyzed from the standpoint of intergenerational mobility. In our opinion, the resources available for accumulation in the dynasty stimulate perspectives of professional loyalty to a greater extent than social and professional upward mobility of engineers. Localization of social capital in the dynasties can be treated as one of the instruments for the maintenance of proper qualification level of the engineering community.
