Abstract

Results of 50-year research of the formation of preferences and the real social behavior of young people in education are studied. It is shown that the preferences and social behavior are largely determined by objective factors of reality. In particular, the impact of the competitive situation (defined as the ratio of the number of applicants and vacancies) is analyzed. The data have been given on the effect of competitive situation on the accessibility of higher education for different social groups at various times. The necessity of multi-faceted approach to the evaluation of inequality in education (including the analysis of the choice stages, beginning with fantastic one and up to self-determination in the labor market) is founded. Based on research materials, a system of indicators for the analysis of inequality in education is proposed.
