Abstract

Civic identity of Crimean tatars has gone to the background: lowering share of those who identify with Ukraine has not been compensated with the growing share of those identifying with Russia. Traditionally closely connected for the Crimean tatars ethnic and regional identities have undergone erosion: confessional identity obtains more and more importance. It substitutes regional identity whereas ethnic identity keeps dominant role. The article is based on the representative survey of the Crimean tatars conducted by the VCIOM) in October 2015 (N=1200) and qualitative research conducted by VCIOM and Institute of Sociology RAS in summer and autumn 2015.
