Abstract

The invention of the concepts of sustainable development and as its practical implementation the idea of sustainable city is under the examination in the article. The intellectual history of the concept during the last century shows, why all practical experiments failed, and how the negative experince strenthened the theoretical horizon for the up-to-the-date re-invention of the sustainable city. Modern debates are under the consideration too.
