Duka A.V. Monarchist temptation of the Russian elite. In: Power and Elites

Abstract

The article examines the evolution of the monarchist views and practices of the Russian elite after 1991. It is shown that over the past 25 years they have transformed, which is connected both with the process of institutionalization of power groups and the reformatting of the social order. At the initial stage (1991-1992), monarchists and pretenders to the throne are getting acquainted with the new Russian elite. The second stage (1993-1997) is connected, first, with the attempt of one of the groups of the Romanovs (Kirilloviches) to integrate into the Yeltsin regime. Secondly, attempt of Yeltsin and his entourage use the Romanovs in their own interests. Third, the combination of politics and business. At the third stage (1998-2010) occurs the symbolic and organizational consolidation of the monarchical potential. The fourth stage (2011-2013) is connected with the anniversary of the House of Romanovs. There was a natural activation of secular monarchist organizations and Orthodox activists. But at the same time, the issue of the possibility of candidacy for kings not from the Romanovs is being increasingly discussed. The fifth stage (2014-2015) is characterized by the mobilization of public and political forces in connection with the conflict with Ukraine and the annexation of the Crimea to Russia. Some of the federal elites openly discuss the question of changing the form of government. Continuing and now the sixth stage (from 2016) on the one hand, is a continuation of the previous one. On the other hand, during this period the monarchical problems become part of the agenda for the general public. Also, the use of monarchical symbols is expanding, monumental propaganda is beginning to work - the appearance monuments to the kings and figures associated with the monarchy in the Russian cities.
