Abstract

The purpose of the article is to identify the main functions in the work of N.M. Karamzin. By functions are meant unconscious tools, which, in addition to the plot of the narrative, I can tell my own story. This story is related to the author's living of a certain experience, preceding the story and testifying about his own impressions and preferences. Of great importance for the analysis are not only descriptions of specific manifestations of the author's sensuality, but also the plot context in which it manifests itself. The basic text for the analysis are Letters of the Russian traveler. In this article, the function of odors is considered as one of the most characteristic markers of everyday life. The reference to olfactory sensations allows to penetrate into the system of understanding the world of man of the end of XIII - beginning of XIX centuries.
