Abstract

The fire that happened at the Institute of Scientific Information in Social Sciences (INION) in early 2015 was called a cultural catastrophe by scientists and cultural figures. In Russia, this is the second catastrophe of this scale. Such catastrophes become a significant event for certain groups of the population. This article will present a chronicle of cultural catastrophe and the specifics of the participation of various actors in the process of eliminating their consequences, with an emphasis on the activities of volunteers. The value specificity of the catastrophe is also shown, which is manifested in the fact that a cultural catastrophe becomes an extraordinary event only for specific groups of the population.
