This accelerates the aging processes in the region and increases the burden on the able-bodied population. The article presents an analysis of the scope and trends of migration of young people in the Irkutsk region using the data of the last three population censuses (1989, 2002, 2010) and currently compiled statistics data (2012-2015). By the «cohort component method» we estimated the youth migration at the level of cities and districts of the region for two intercensal periods. The study found that 50% of the regions of the region have an outflow of young people more than 45%, the rest - about 10-30%. At older ages (23-27 years), the return migration after the graduation of the university has a small positive effect, but it is not able to compensate for the too high level of losses of earlier ages. Around the capital of the region (Irkutsk and its agglomeration) an environment of depleted cities and regions was demolished, and their final demographic exhaustion seems inevitable in the near future.
