The proposed article presents an analysis of the motives and perspectives of professional retraining while changing profession after the age of 45 years based on the analysis of statistical data and materials of in-depth interviews. The job shift in the pre-retirement age is understood as horizontal occupational mobility and is considered as a factor of the adaptation of the employees to the variability and unpredictability of the social and professional environment.
