The patristic doctrine of virtues is considered as a civilizational choice and a moral law, which goes back to the domestic, primarily Orthodox cultural heritage, is analyzed in the light of the modern critical pedagogy of the place. Materials and methods. The research is based on theoretical and empirical methods: analysis, generalization, systematization of philosophical, theological, pedagogical, sociological literature, diary method, cross-sections, questioning, in-depth interviews, focus groups, experiment. The educational model of the Orthodox gymnasium The Ladder of virtues is developed and tested on the basis of eternal moral values. Information and analytical center of the faculty of social Sciences of St. Tikhon's Orthodox University for the Humanities in early 2019 determined the value and semantic preferences of the participants of the project The Ladder of virtues. 309 students in grades 1-8 were interviewed, 46% of them boys and 54% girls; and 80 parents (50% men and 50% women). Research result. The process of mastering the virtues in the Orthodox gymnasium named after St. Alexander Nevsky in Nizhny Novgorod is organized as a religious socialization of all subjects of education: schoolchildren, parents, teachers and clergy. As a result of sociological research the inverse relationship between cognitive abilities, age of the child and his spiritual and moral culture in its patristic understanding, other features of formation of the most important virtues is revealed. Discussion and conclusion. The patristic doctrine of virtues is considered for the first time as a part of pedagogical axiology, a harmonious system of traditional moral values, the theoretical basis of religious socialization affecting the basic values of an adult. After analyzing the results of the experiment, determining the universal and variable elements of the system of spiritual and moral education, the proposed model can be used in other Orthodox institutions.
