The purpose of the study is to analyze the opinion of the scientific community (the faculty of technical universities in Russia) regarding the methods and directions of modernization of the higher engineering school of Russia, the problems it faces and ways to solve them. The chosen research method is qualitative manual content analysis of publications on this topic in specialized scientific journals. This is a new author’s technique that combines the quantitative approach inherent in the methodology of traditional content analysis with an in-depth qualitative analysis of the material under study. The empirical objects were elected using of computer keywords search. These are the publications of specialized editions of the higher education in Russia, academic monographs and materials of the scientific conferences and seminars. The paper discusses the relationship between theory and practice in the educational process, suggests some ways to modernize higher engineering education in Russia.
