Abstract

The article focuses on the significance of the census for country residents as a single society with a single information space. The features of the upcoming All-Russian Population Census 2020 (RPC-2020), as a part of the world round of censuses, are considered. Current trends in the technology of conducting censuses in developed countries, the holding of socalled «alternative» censuses, including combined censuses, are indicated. A joint opinion was expressed on the possibility of organizing a census in Russia on a modern technological basis — a single population register. The special significance of the 2020 census is emphasized in connection with the severity of Russian demographic challenges.
