S.I. Hessen on Vyacheslav IVANOV’s «Tower». Humanities Research in the Russian Far East, 2019, No. 4 (50), pp. 137-139.

Abstract

The article considers the fate of the famous «tower» in St. Petersburg of the Russian poet and thinker of the Silver age Vyacheslav Ivanov after his departure abroad. The author covers the history of the house, its fate during the Soviet era, during the great Patriotic war and at the present time. The questions about the correlation of mass and elite culture in the past and the present are touched upon. Previously unknown letters of S.I. Hessen addressed to V.I. Ivanov and M.M. Zamyatnina are published., which deal not only with domestic problems associated with the temporary residence of Hessen on the «tower», but also with the history of the journal «Logos» published in the early twentieth century. The author concludes that the «tower» on Tavricheskaja street in St. Petersburg is a kind of symbol of the entire Russian culture of the early twentieth century and expresses the hope that in the future it will become a real Museum.
