Based on the data of the All-Russian Census of Population of 2002 and 2010 and the data of the Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey – Higher School of Economics (RLMS-HSE), groups of multi-child households and multi-child family units are identified, and their numbers are estimated, the methodology of the selection of the above groups, technical difficulties and features when working with data are described in detail. The author raises the question of the possibility of using these categories as comparable. To answer this question, an attempt is made to identify statistically significant differences in key indicators, such as income, expenses (including their components), housing conditions, availability of durables, subjective well-being.
