The main provisions and conclusions of the article are based on data from a survey of the population of the Republic of Karelia within the framework of the Russian-Swedish project “Ecology and Gender”, the purpose of which was to study the everyday practices of the popula-tion of the republic in the environmental sphere. The article substanti-ates the point of view according to which the development of modern technologies, leading to a decrease in the severity of environmental problems in the industrial sphere, being used to create a comfortable human environment, leads to the transfer of environmental problems into the sphere of everyday life of people. The use of a gender ap-proach allows a deeper understanding of the origins and causes of the level of environmental activity of men and women, since the gender order largely determines the nature of everyday practices, its change towards the prevalence of egalitarian gender relations, as the results of the study have shown, are a necessary condition for the formation of responsible environmental behavior as men, and women.
