Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of the main types of leisure activity of Russian youth and its limitation factors. Based on a survey carried out by Institute for Social Analysis and Forecasting of the RANEPA in March 2019, it is shown that an active lifestyle that involves a wide variety of leisure practices, including self-development, is typical for Russian youth. Based on empirical data, it is confirmed that the leisure activity of young people in Russia is associated with their socio-economic status, as predicted by classical theories. Moreover, in modern Russian society, existing differences in the types of this activity among young people will contribute to the deepening of social inequality in the future. This is due to the fact that supporters of active leisure belong to relatively higher status groups and are characterized by the use of the spare time to maintain and increase their human potential (primarily through self-education and practices of healthy lifestyle), which is less common for other groups of Russian youth. It is also shown that the choice of the simplest forms of leisure for a significant part of young Russians is often non-alternative, since it is associated with poor health, living in rural areas, or socialization in low-resource families. The conclusion is made about the growing importance of the problem of inequality in the sphere of leisure among young people, which contributes to the aggravation of social differentiation in a highly polarized Russian society.
