Abstract

The purpose of the work is to substantiate, from the point of view of ensuring national and economic  safety and high quality of life, the optimal Russian strategy of spatial development on the example of  megalopolises (urban agglomerations). The main research methods were analysis and synthesis of analytical and  statistical data on the development of megalopolises in the world and in Russia. The article discusses theoretical  approaches to the formation and development of megalopolises; the analysis of the formation of large cities  and megalopolises in Russia has been carried out. It is concluded that in the conditions of a sparsely populated  territory of the country, the best strategy for spatial development is to rely on the construction of an extensive  system of small and medium-sized urban agglomerations (widely stretched megalopolises).
