Abstract

The authors focus on the main vectors of changes in family life and parenting in Russia during the post-Soviet period. After the collapse of the USSR, men and women found themselves in a new society, which not only lived by new economic and political laws, but also required them to reorganize their private lives in accordance with the changed conditions. We often hear conflicting opinions about what is happening to the Russian family and gender order. On the one hand, we are told that the institution of the family is in crisis, fertility is falling, divorce rate is rising, morals are declining, and young people are becoming more and more selfish, seeking to tie the knot and parenting obligations. On the other hand, the opinion is expressed that Russia is experiencing a traditionalist setback, is the guardian of family values and is actively fighting threats to traditional gender relations. Does it really happen? How much have Russians' values and attitudes towards family and parenting changed during this time? What are the main trends characteristic of these changes? We analyze the results of the VTCIOM opinion polls on the values and perceptions of the family, parenting, gender relations in Russian society for the period from 1989 to 2020.
